Split Bill Calculator: Even, by Item, or Who Owes Whom
Split a restaurant bill evenly or by what each person had, with tax and tip shared fairly, or settle a trip's shared expenses with the fewest payments; share the result with a link.
Split Bill Calculator: Even, by Item, or Who Owes Whom: For a bill, items shared by several people are divided equally among them, and tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person had, so someone who ordered only a salad pays less tip than someone who had a steak. For group expenses, each person's balance is what they paid minus their share, and the calculator lists the payments that settle every balance. All amounts are worked in whole cents, with any leftover cent given out so the shares add up exactly to the total. The share link carries the calculation itself after the # in the address, which browsers never send to a server. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Total $120.00
| Person | Food and drink | Tax | Tip | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Person 1 | $40.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $40.00 |
| Person 2 | $40.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $40.00 |
| Person 3 | $40.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $40.00 |
| Total | $120.00 | $0.00 | $0.00 | $120.00 |
Tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person had. Shares are rounded to the smallest coin so they add up exactly to the total.
Splitting evenly or by item
An even split is quickest and works when everyone ordered about the same. When orders differ a lot, or someone did not drink, splitting by item is fairer and avoids the awkward conversation afterwards.
To work out the tip on its own, use the tip calculator; for a bill in another currency abroad, convert the totals with the currency converter.
Trips and shared houses
On a trip, different people pay for the hotel, the meals, and the taxis. Record each payment as it happens, with who paid and who it was for, and settle once at the end: the list of payments is usually far shorter than paying each other back expense by expense.
How to use it
- Add the people, and choose one bill or group expenses.
- For a bill, enter the total or each item and who had it, then the tax and tip. For a trip, enter each expense, who paid, and who it was for.
- Read what each person pays, or who pays whom, and copy it or send the share link.

Frequently asked questions
How do you split a bill fairly when people ordered different things?
Choose Split by item, enter each dish and drink with the people who had it, and add tax and tip. Each person pays for what they had, an equal part of anything shared, and tax and tip in proportion to their part of the bill.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
In the United States the usual advice is to tip on the amount before tax, which is the default here. Tick the box to tip on the total with tax if you prefer.
How does “who owes whom” work?
Enter each shared expense, who paid it, and who it was for. Everyone's balance is what they paid minus their share. The calculator then lists payments that bring every balance to zero: debts that cancel exactly are paired first, then the person who owes most pays the person owed most.
Is the share link private?
The link contains the names and amounts in the part after #, which is never sent to a server: anyone you send it to sees the same calculation, opened in their own browser. Anyone with the link can see it, so share it only with the group.
