Gratuity and equal shares: worked example
Tip = bill amount × tip percentage ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Equal share = total ÷ people. With a bill of 80, a chosen 18% tip and two people, the tip is 80 × 18 ÷ 100 = 14.40; total is 80 + 14.40 = 94.40; each share is 94.40 ÷ 2 = 47.20.
The sample percentage demonstrates the calculation and does not recommend a tipping level. A zero tip leaves the original bill to be split. The bill must be positive and the people count must be a whole number; fractional people or a zero-person split cannot describe an equal payment allocation.
Choosing a tip in context
Tipping expectations vary by country and setting. The International Trade Administration advises travellers to learn local tipping conventions (https://beta.trade.gov/article?id=Obtaining-Proper-Documentations-Planning-an-Itinerary). This page makes no country-specific recommendation: choose a percentage based on the bill, any included charges and the local context you have checked.
The currency setting changes the way amounts appear without converting the bill. If you want a particular cash tip rather than a percentage, divide that desired tip by the bill and multiply by 100 to obtain the rate to enter. Keep the chosen base explicit when discussing a group payment, since using different bill totals gives different gratuities even at the same percentage.

Does the calculator tip on the before-tax or after-tax bill?
It applies the percentage to whichever amount you enter. There is no separate tax field. Enter a before-tax amount if that is your intended tipping base, or the after-tax bill if that is the base you choose; the tool cannot infer the difference.
Is an existing service charge deducted from the tip?
No. The tool adds the entered tip percentage to the bill and does not recognise an included gratuity or service charge. Read the bill first and choose the additional amount you intend to pay, including zero if you do not want to add another tip.
Can the group split the bill unequally?
This widget divides the entire bill plus tip equally among a positive whole number of people. It cannot allocate individual dishes or different shares. If rounding creates a small difference in the sum collected, agree who pays the remainder when settling the bill.
