About the reference rates

The European Central Bank sets its euro reference rates once each working day from a regular concertation between central banks at 14:10 CET, and publishes them at about 16:00. Each rate is the value of one euro in another currency; the page converts between any two by going through the euro. No rates are set at weekends or on TARGET holidays, so the latest working day's rates apply until the next ones are published.

The ECB publishes them for information purposes only and discourages using them for transactions. They are a benchmark close to the market's middle rate, not a price anyone will buy or sell at, which makes them suited to budgeting, comparing prices, and rough estimates.

What a transfer or card payment will really cost

Banks and card providers convert at their own rate, which usually differs from the reference rate by a margin, and may add a fixed fee on top. Comparing the amount they quote with the amount here shows the margin they charge. When a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your own currency, the conversion is done by the shop's provider, often at a less favourable rate than your card's.

To compare prices per kilogram or per unit after converting, use the unit price calculator; for a percentage difference between two prices, the percentage calculator.

How to use it

  1. Enter the amount and choose the two currencies.
  2. Read the converted amount and the rate both ways.
  3. Use the table for common amounts, or swap the currencies with one click.

Privacy & limitations

Amounts are converted in your browser. The page asks toea.com for the day's rates, which come from the ECB; the amount you enter is never sent.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?

From the European Central Bank's euro foreign exchange reference rates, set each working day at about 14:10 CET and published at about 16:00 CET for around 30 currencies. They do not change at weekends or on TARGET holidays, so the last working day's rates apply.

Why is my bank's rate different?

Reference rates are a mid-market benchmark for information. Banks, card providers, and exchange offices set their own buying and selling rates and often add a fee or margin, so what you pay or receive is usually a little worse.

Why is my currency missing?

The ECB publishes rates only for the currencies of the other EU countries and for major world currencies with liquid markets, about 30 in all. Other currencies are not in its list.

How are rates between two non-euro currencies worked out?

Through the euro. One US dollar in yen is the yen per euro divided by the dollars per euro. Banks quote cross rates the same way, so the result matches a direct quote to within rounding.
