Spelling Practice (Spelling Test with Spoken Words)

Type a spelling list and the page reads each word aloud for students to spell, then marks the answers, shows the mistakes, and lets them practise those again. Share the list with a link.

Spelling Practice (Spelling Test with Spoken Words): Each word is read by the speech voices built into the device, in random order, at normal speed or slowly. An answer counts as right when it matches the word apart from capital letters, so accents and every letter count. A shared link carries the list after the # sign, which browsers never send to a server. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Runs entirely in your browser

The words are read aloud by your device's own speech voices, so the accent depends on the voices installed; most phones and computers have several languages. A shared link carries the list after the # sign, which browsers never send to the server.

Sharing a list with the class

Copy a link for students and post it in your class's online space. When they open it, the list is ready to practise; each student's answers stay on their own device, so there is nothing to collect or store.

Because the list is inside the link, changing the list means sending a new link.

Making practice stick

Short, frequent practice works better than one long session: run the list a few times across the week, then practise just the mistakes. Hearing the word slowly helps with silent letters and double consonants.

To hear a whole sentence or passage read aloud, use text to speech; for a puzzle using the same words, the word search generator.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste the words, one per line, and choose the voice language.
  2. Start, or copy a link for students to open on their own devices.
  3. Listen, type each word, and check; at the end, see the score and practise the mistakes.

Privacy & limitations

Words and answers stay on the device; a shared link keeps the list in the part of the address that is not sent to any server.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the voice sound different on another device?

Each phone or computer has its own speech voices; the list sounds the same in meaning but the accent and voice change.

Can students see the words?

Not while practising: the words are only spoken. A student who opens the link can of course find them in the address, so it suits practice rather than graded tests.

Does it work in other languages?

Yes, for any language with a speech voice on the device: choose it under Voice language.
