Speech to Text: Free Online Dictation

Type with your voice: speak into the microphone in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and 15 more languages and your words appear as text you can edit, copy, or save as a file, using your browser's built-in speech recognition, with no account.

Speech to Text: Free Online Dictation: Recognition is done by your browser's speech service, the same one behind voice typing in its search box: Chrome and Edge send the audio to Google's or Microsoft's servers, and Safari to Apple's or its own device. Finished phrases are added to the text with spacing and capitals, saying new line or new paragraph in English starts a new line, and the session restarts itself after pauses until you stop it. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Runs entirely in your browser

Not processed on your device: the browser sends your voice to its maker's speech service to be recognised. Chrome and Edge use Google's or Microsoft's servers; Safari uses Apple's, or the device itself for some languages. TOEA never receives the audio or the text. Do not dictate anything you would not say to those services.

Better accuracy

Use a headset or sit close to the microphone, speak in full phrases at a steady pace, and choose the exact variety of your language, such as English (India) or Português (Portugal).

Long dictation

Stop and start between topics: shorter sessions are recognised more reliably and are easier to correct.

How to use it

  1. Choose the language you will speak.
  2. Press start dictating and allow the microphone.
  3. Speak; edit the text, then copy or download it.

Privacy & limitations

The audio goes to your browser maker's speech service, not to TOEA; the text stays in your browser.

Chrome, Edge, and Safari on computers and phones. Firefox does not offer speech recognition to web pages.

Is it private?

Not fully: your voice is processed by your browser maker's speech service, under its terms. TOEA never receives the audio or the text. Avoid dictating confidential information.

Does it add punctuation?

Some languages and browsers add it, others do not. You can type punctuation in the text box while dictating.
