Sideways photos and the orientation tag
Phones and cameras often save a photo as the sensor captured it and add an EXIF orientation tag that tells viewers how to turn it. Current browsers obey the tag, so a photo appears here the way your phone shows it, even if an upload form or an older program showed it sideways. Rotate from what you see here, not from what the other program showed. The download has the turn built into its pixels and no tag, so every viewer shows it the same way; the EXIF viewer shows the tag of the original.
Rotating without piling up loss
PNG files stay lossless, but JPG and WebP are encoded again at 92% quality each time. Once is hard to see; several rounds on the same file add up, so pick the final angle in one step, 270° rather than 90° three times, and start from the original. Only quarter turns are offered: straightening a tilted horizon needs an editor with free rotation and a crop afterwards. Where no loss at all is acceptable, the command-line tool jpegtran can turn JPGs by quarter turns without re-encoding them.

Frequently asked questions
Does rotation change the dimensions?
A 90° or 270° turn swaps width and height; 180° does not.
Does it recompress the image?
Yes. Browser canvas creates a new file from the visible pixels.
