Place Value Chart and Expanded Form

Type a number to see each digit in its column, from hundred millions down to thousandths, the value each digit stands for, and the number in expanded form, and print the chart.

Place Value Chart and Expanded Form: Each digit is placed by its position: in 3,425.07 the 3 is in the thousands column and worth 3,000, the 4 is worth 400, the 2 is worth 20, the 5 is worth 5, and the 7 is in the hundredths and worth 0.07. The expanded form adds the values: 3,000 + 400 + 20 + 5 + 0.07. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Each place is worth ten times the place to its right: in 3,425 the 3 is worth 3,000 and the 2 only 20. The decimal places continue the pattern, with tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. The expanded form writes the number as the sum of its digits' values.

The pattern

Moving one place left multiplies a digit's value by ten, and moving one place right divides it by ten. That is why multiplying by 10 shifts every digit one place to the left.

In words

To read the number aloud or write it on a cheque, use number to words.

How to use it

  1. Type a number, with up to three decimals.
  2. Read each digit's place and value.
  3. Copy the expanded form or print the chart.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a zero matter?

It holds a place: in 1,002 the zeros show there are no hundreds and no tens, so the 1 is worth a thousand rather than ten.

What comes after the decimal point?

Tenths, hundredths, and thousandths: each place is a tenth of the one to its left, just as each place to the left is ten times bigger.

Is the expanded form the same as writing the number in words?

No: the expanded form is a sum of values. To write a number out in words, use number to words.
