PDF Booklet Maker

Rearrange a PDF into a saddle-stitched booklet: print it double-sided, fold the stack in half, and the pages read in order. Blank pages are added as needed.

PDF Booklet Maker: A booklet's page count is padded to a multiple of four, because each folded sheet carries four pages, two on each side. The first sheet's front holds the last page and page 1, its back pages 2 and the second-to-last, and so on inwards, so the folded stack reads 1, 2, 3, and onwards. Pages are copied as vectors, scaled to fit their half of the sheet. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Nothing is uploaded

Print the result on both sides of the paper, flipping on the short edge, then fold the stack in half and staple along the fold: the pages come out in reading order. The PDF is rearranged in your browser and never uploaded.

A worked example

An 8-page document makes 2 sheets. Sheet 1's front has pages 8 and 1, its back 2 and 7; sheet 2's front has 6 and 3, its back 4 and 5. Stack sheet 2 inside sheet 1, fold, and the pages run 1 to 8.

To put more pages on a sheet without folding, use PDF n-up; to change the page order first, reorder PDF pages.

Thick booklets

Saddle stitching suits up to about 60 pages on ordinary paper. Beyond that, the inner sheets push outwards (creep), and it is easier to print several smaller booklets, called signatures, and bind them together.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick the sheet: twice the page width, or a standard paper such as A4 or Letter in landscape.
  3. Download, print double-sided flipping on the short edge, fold, and staple.

Frequently asked questions

How should I print it?

Double-sided, flipping on the short edge, at actual size or fit to page. Print a test sheet first: printers differ in how they flip.

Why were blank pages added?

A folded booklet always has a multiple of four pages; a 10-page document becomes 12, with the two blanks at the back.

What paper should I use?

For A5 pages, A4 landscape sheets make an A5 booklet with no scaling; for Letter pages, Tabloid sheets do the same. Smaller sheets shrink the pages to fit.
