Paint Online: a free Microsoft Paint alternative

Paint on a blank canvas or open an image. Use pencil, brushes, fill, text, shapes and selections, then save PNG, JPG, WebP or BMP. Your work stays on this device.

Paint Online: a free Microsoft Paint alternative: A familiar paint workbench for diagrams, annotations and pixel drawings. Pencil makes a one-pixel stroke. Brush offers round, square and spray tips, with size and pen pressure. Eraser uses the secondary colour, or clears pixels when Transparent background is enabled. Fill changes a connected area; tolerance from 0 to 255 allows differences in red, green, blue and alpha from the starting pixel. Colour picker samples a pixel. Text uses a font family, size, bold and italic. Line and arrow join two points. Rectangle, rounded rectangle, ellipse and polygon support outline, fill, or both; both uses the secondary colour inside. Draw a curve's endpoints, then drag to bend it; click polygon corners and finish with Enter. Rectangle and free-form selections can be dragged, copied, cut, deleted or cropped. Resize the canvas to crop or add space, or enable Scale image to stretch pixels. Skew, rotate and flip change the whole image. Zoom to 800% or higher for a pixel grid. Keep at least 50 edits in undo history during the current visit. For a quick phone sketch, try the [drawing pad](/drawing-pad); for vector paths, use the [SVG editor](/svg-editor). Resize, skew, rotate and flip

Canvas resize crops or adds space. Enable Scale image to stretch the artwork using crisp nearest-pixel scaling. Skew fits the tilted image into a larger canvas. Maximum: 2048 pixels per side and 4 million pixels total.

Drag a selection to move it. Free-form selections use a closed outline around the pixels you trace. A crop discards pixels outside the selection. Canvas resize handles sit at the right edge, bottom edge and bottom-right corner. Touch and pen use the same tools; brush pressure changes stroke size when a pen supplies it.

Canvas and local storage

The HTML Living Standard describes the browser's drawing surface and image encoding (https://html.spec.whatwg.org/multipage/canvas.html). This tool draws original icons and uses a locally defined 28-colour palette; no third-party artwork is included.

MDN's Canvas guide (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Canvas_API/Tutorial) explains raster drawing and transparency. MDN's IndexedDB guide (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/IndexedDB_API) explains the local storage used for the draft. Clipboard support and access vary by browser.

How to use it

  1. Start on the white canvas, or open an image from the drop zone, a file or paste into the focused drop zone.
  2. Choose a tool on the left, set primary and secondary colours below the canvas, and draw. Use right click for the secondary colour.
  3. Undo an edit, resize or rotate the image if needed, then choose a format and save it.

Privacy & limitations

Images and drawing operations stay in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. The latest canvas is autosaved in IndexedDB on this device; each mode has its own draft. New canvas resets that draft and the undo history. Browser storage can be cleared, so download work you want to keep.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open or paste an image?

Expand Open image and browse or drop a file to replace the canvas. Focus that drop zone to open a clipboard image with Ctrl+V. Paste elsewhere, or use the Paste button, to place an image at the top left so you can select and move it. Both operations can be undone. Copy works with the selection or the whole image; clipboard access needs browser permission. If access is blocked, the internal copy remains available through Paste on this page.

Does this work like Microsoft Paint?

The tools panel, primary and secondary colours, palette, resize handles and status bar are in familiar positions. The artwork, colours and icons belong to TOEA. Microsoft Paint is a trademark of Microsoft; TOEA is not affiliated. This editor runs in the browser and does not require a desktop installation.

Which format should I save?

PNG preserves pixels and transparency. WebP can also preserve transparency, while JPG and BMP flatten transparent areas on white. JPG and WebP use quality 92%. BMP is uncompressed 24-bit colour. Work up to 2048 pixels per side and 4 million pixels total; larger images should first be reduced with the image resizer. The draft restores pixels and canvas size after a reload, but undo history belongs to the current visit.
