Notenrechner: Grade Average Calculator

Average German school grades with weights, including grades with + and −, and convert upper-school points (0–15) to grades.

Notenrechner: Grade Average Calculator: The weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight, adds them up, and divides by the total weight. Grades with a tendency count a quarter of a grade up or down by default (2− = 2.25, 2+ = 1.75), as most schools do; some count a third. In the upper school, 15 points are a 1+ and 0 points a 6, with each grade spread over three points. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Grades and points

From grade 11 or 12, German schools use 0 to 15 points: 15, 14, and 13 are a 1+, 1, and 1−; 5 points are a 4, and courses below 5 points count as deficits; 0 points are a 6. The formula is grade = (17 − points) ÷ 3.

Averages that mislead

An unweighted average gives a short quiz the same weight as a two-hour test. Ask how your teacher weights each kind of work, and enter the weights the same way.

How to use it

  1. Enter each grade, such as 2, 3− or 2,5, and its weight, such as 2 for a test that counts double.
  2. Choose how + and − count: a quarter of a grade, or a third.
  3. Read the weighted average and its rounded value; the table converts 0–15 points to grades.

Frequently asked questions

How are written and oral grades weighted?

It depends on the school and subject; a common split is half written work and half oral and other work. Enter each part with its weight, or average each part first and then weight the two.

How do I round my average?

Averages are usually shown to one or two decimal places; how a final report-card grade is rounded from them is set by each state and school, so ask your teacher.

What is 10 points as a grade?

10 points are a 2−, about 2.3.
