Learn to Tell Time: Clock Reading Practice and Worksheets

Help children learn to read an analogue clock: a quiz shows a clock and four times to choose from, at five levels from o'clock and half past to quarter hours, five-minute steps, and any minute, and a worksheet prints twelve clocks to read, with the answers at the bottom.

Learn to Tell Time: Clock Reading Practice and Worksheets: The hour hand moves on as the hour passes, as on a real clock, so at half past three it points halfway between 3 and 4. The wrong answers are the mistakes children usually make: reading the hands the wrong way round, or an hour or a step out. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

What time does the clock show?

Score: 0 of 0

Start with o'clock and half past, then quarters, then five-minute steps. The red short hand points to the hour and moves on a little as the hour goes by; the blue long hand points to the minutes, five for each number. The worksheet prints 12 clocks with the answers at the bottom.

Digital and analogue

Once the analogue clock is easy, practise the 24-hour clock with the 12 and 24-hour converter.

Tip

Point to the long hand and count in fives around the numbers: 5, 10, 15, and so on.

How to use it

  1. Choose a level, starting with o'clock.

Frequently asked questions

What order should children learn in?

O'clock first, then half past, then quarter past and quarter to, then five-minute steps, and finally any minute.

Why does the hour hand not point straight at the number?

Because it moves steadily between numbers through the hour; that is a useful clue to the minutes.

Can I print the clocks?

Yes: the worksheet prints 12 clocks at the chosen level, with the answers at the bottom to fold away or cut off.
