Image / Vector tracing

Image to SVG: Trace a Bitmap into Vector Paths

Open a PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF and trace it into an SVG in your browser. Adjust colours, detail and blur, optionally remove the lightest colour layer, and download the vector drawing or a PNG at the original dimensions.

Image to SVG: Trace a Bitmap into Vector Paths: The browser decodes the image and reduces it to at most 1000 pixels on the longest side before ImageTracer groups colours and fits paths to their outlines. The result shows the number of SVG paths and file size. GIF input uses the first frame. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

The live trace uses a smaller preview. Downloads trace the original image. GIF uses its first frame. Transparent pixels are composited over white. Removing a colour can also remove parts of the subject.

Below 80% detail, tracing uses dominant colours and merges isolated specks. Higher detail keeps edge shades and can produce much larger files.

Tracing controls

Colour count ranges from 2 to 64. More detail keeps smaller paths and tightens curve fitting; blur smooths the source before tracing. Trace again after changing controls to compare the new result.

Choosing a result format

SVG stores paths and colours and can be edited in a vector editor. PNG stores a fixed raster image and may be easier to place in documents. Both reflect the traced result, including any removed colour layer.

How to use it

  1. Open an image and choose a tracing preset.
  2. Adjust colours, detail, blur and the lightest-layer option, then trace the image.
  3. Compare the previews and download SVG or PNG.

Privacy & limitations

The source image and traced result stay in this browser. The tracer is bundled with the site and no image is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does this recover the original vector artwork?

No. Tracing approximates the visible pixels. Small lettering, gradients and photographs may need manual editing after tracing.

How does the background option work?

It removes the lightest visible colour layer when there is another layer to keep. It can also remove light details in the subject. The preview explains when no separate layer can be removed.

Why is the PNG the original size but less detailed?

The PNG is drawn at the source dimensions from paths traced at the processing limit. Increasing output dimensions does not restore details discarded during downscaling.
