Image / Vector tracing

JPG to SVG — Local Browser Tool

Convert JPG or JPEG artwork into traced SVG paths with adjustable colours, detail and blur, then compare and download the result.

JPG to SVG — Local Browser Tool: Use this page when artwork arrives as a JPEG attachment, a scanned drawing or a photograph of a sign. The upload picker accepts JPG and JPEG, and starts with a few-colour trace to keep the result manageable. JPEG is designed for photographs and uses lossy compression. Edge ringing, block marks and soft colour transitions can become extra shapes during tracing. If you can get the original flat artwork as PNG or SVG, it may give a cleaner result than tracing a JPEG copy. For a scanned drawing, try black and white first. For a painted design, compare few colours with many colours before increasing detail. Blur can reduce small compression marks, but can also round sharp features. The detail slider controls how closely the trace follows edges and how aggressively small specks are merged. A photographic portrait is likely to look stylised and create a large SVG, rather than becoming a small, perfectly scalable photograph. Text in the image becomes approximate outlines; the original font and editable words cannot be recovered. The side-by-side preview shows the raster and the vector approximation. It uses a reduced image with a longest side of 600 pixels, while downloads trace the original source. Files must be under 50 MB, at most 8192 pixels in either dimension and at most 40 million pixels total. Download SVG for path editing, or PNG to save a raster version of the trace. Export scale changes the PNG dimensions only. Nothing is uploaded and the original JPEG remains untouched. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Trace JPG artwork into editable paths. Photos and JPEG compression marks can create many small paths. Start with few colours, then increase detail if needed.

Up to 50 MB and 40 million pixels, with each dimension no larger than 8192 px. Processing stays on this device.

The live trace uses a smaller preview. Downloads trace the original image. GIF uses its first frame. Transparent pixels are composited over white. Removing a colour can also remove parts of the subject.

Below 80% detail, tracing uses dominant colours and merges isolated specks. Higher detail keeps edge shades and can produce much larger files.

Vector paths and tracing

SVG paths describe outlines that can be resized without a fixed pixel grid. The SVG specification (https://www.w3.org/TR/SVG2/) explains paths and painting. Tracing approximates the source; it does not recover the original design file.

Tracing software and transparency

ImageTracerJS is used under the Unlicense; its source and licence (https://github.com/jankovicsandras/imagetracerjs) describe the tracing options. Transparent pixels are placed over white. Removing the lightest colour layer is optional and can also remove light areas inside the artwork.

How to use it

  1. Choose a file in the input format shown.
  2. Adjust the available output controls.
  3. Create the result, check its preview and download it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a photograph to SVG without losing detail?

Tracing turns tonal areas into coloured shapes. It may simplify gradients, skin texture and hair. Increase colours and detail to compare, but expect a stylised result and a potentially large file.

How can I reduce JPEG artefacts in the SVG?

Try a little blur and fewer colours, or trace a cleaner source. Avoid repeatedly saving the JPEG before tracing, because each lossy save can introduce more visible artefacts.

Can I make text editable again?

Tracing follows the visible letter outlines; it does not recognise the words or restore the font. Redraw text in an SVG editor when you need exact, editable lettering.
