I Ching Hexagrams: Names, Lines and Trigrams

Explore the 64 I Ching hexagrams in King Wen or Fu Xi binary order. Click six lines to look up a hexagram and see its structural relationships.

I Ching Hexagrams: Names, Lines and Trigrams: Maps all six-line yin/yang patterns to King Wen numbers and Unicode characters. Nuclear hexagrams use lines 2–3–4 below 3–4–5; opposite flips every line; inverse reverses line order. This is a cultural structure reference, without divination, random casting or predictions. Structural rules and sources

Nuclear: lines 2–3–4 form the lower trigram and lines 3–4–5 the upper. Opposite: change every yin line to yang and every yang line to yin. Inverse: turn the six-line sequence upside down. Names are short factual glosses; no judgements or line readings are reproduced.

Names, order and Unicode

The received Zhouyi sequence is available at the Chinese Text Project: https://ctext.org/book-of-changes/yi-jing . Unicode assigns U+4DC0 through U+4DFF consecutively in King Wen order: https://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U4DC0.pdf . Only short name glosses appear here, not modern translated judgements or line texts.

Composition and structural relationships

Jean Pierre Charalambos and Hilary Barrett's 2004 design document publishes the complete lower/upper trigram composition table and opposite and nuclear tables: https://iching.sourceforge.net/Documentation/design/design-one/index.html . All sixty-four pairs are used as fixed test fixtures. Yin is represented by a broken line and yang by a continuous line.

How to use it

  1. Select a King Wen number or switch the six lines from bottom to top.
  2. Read the Chinese name, pinyin, short gloss and upper and lower trigrams.
  3. Inspect nuclear, opposite and inverse hexagrams, or switch the full table to Fu Xi binary order.

Frequently asked questions

Which line is first?

The bottom line is line 1. Binary strings are also shown bottom to top, with 1 for a solid yang line and 0 for a broken yin line.

Which Fu Xi ordering is used?

The linear, Heaven-first order, ending with Earth. The top line varies fastest. Bottom-to-top binary strings descend from 111111 to 000000; King Wen numbers do not change.

What are the three related hexagrams?

The nuclear hexagram uses the middle four lines twice: 2–3–4 for its lower trigram, 3–4–5 for its upper. The opposite changes every line's polarity. The inverse reverses the six lines. These are structural operations only.

Does this include readings or translated passages?

No. It shows names, short factual name glosses, symbols and structure. There is no random casting, divination, judgement text or modern translation of the line texts.
