Unit Price Calculator

Compare products by price per kilogram, litre, or piece: enter each price and size, in grams, ounces, pounds, millilitres, or fluid ounces, and see which is the best value.

Unit Price Calculator: Each product's price is divided by its total amount, packs times size, after converting the size to grams, millilitres, pieces, or metres. Ounces and pounds use the international avoirdupois definitions, and US and UK fluid ounces are told apart. Products are compared per the unit you choose, and the cheapest per unit is marked. Reading shelf labels

In the EU and the UK, shops must show the price per kilogram or litre next to the selling price; in the US, unit pricing is required only in some states, and the unit may differ between neighbouring products. Check the label against your own sum when packs are on offer, because the unit price on the shelf is not always updated.

For a discount on top, work out the sale price first with the discount calculator, then compare.

Cooking quantities

If a recipe gives cups and the pack gives grams, convert with the cooking converter to see how much of a pack a recipe uses, and so what it costs.

How to use it

  1. Enter the price and the size of each product; for multipacks, the number of packs and the size of each.
  2. Pick the units on each pack: weights and volumes are converted for you.
  3. Read the price per kilogram, litre, or piece; the best value is marked, with how much more the others cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is the biggest pack always the cheapest?

Often, but not always: offers on smaller packs, and multipacks, regularly beat the large size. Shelf labels sometimes show different units for neighbouring products, which is exactly when a comparison helps.

Can I compare a product in grams with one in ounces?

Yes: one ounce is 28.35 grams and one pound 453.59 grams. Weights cannot be compared with volumes, though, because the density differs from product to product.

What about drained weight?

For tinned food in liquid, compare the drained weight printed on the tin, not the net weight, to compare the food you actually eat.
