French grading is strict. A linear percentage is not the same as a US percentage or a US letter grade.
Linear rescaling preserves the fraction of the maximum: mark ÷ original maximum × new maximum.
Mentions use the unrounded mark. Passable means a pass without a mention. Official bac mentions apply to eligible first-group results; jury congratulations are not modelled.
Baccalauréat thresholds
French Ministry of Education, éduscol: first-group admission at 10/20; Assez bien from 12, Bien from 14, Très bien from 16. Jury congratulations are not modelled. Passable is a descriptive pass label, not an official mention. Accessed 2026-10-04: https://eduscol.education.gouv.fr/5700/presentation-du-baccalaureat-general
Linear rescaling
Mark divided by the original maximum, multiplied by the new maximum. A percent uses a maximum of 100 by definition. This arithmetic does not establish academic equivalence; no institutional ECTS, US letter or GPA mapping is asserted.
How to use it
- Choose a French mark or a linear percentage as the input.
- Enter the mark and a positive maximum for the optional custom output scale.
- Read the unrounded mark's mention band and the linear conversions.

Frequently asked questions
Is Passable an official bac mention?
No. It is used here as a descriptive label for a pass without a mention. Official mentions apply to eligible first-group baccalauréat results.
Can I use this for an admissions conversion?
Use the receiving institution's rules. No ECTS, US letter grade or GPA conversion table is included.
Are jury congratulations included?
No. The tool groups marks in the broad Très bien band; it does not model the separate jury-congratulations distinction or eligibility rules.
Do rounded marks affect the mention?
No. Display rounding does not change the threshold comparison.
