Easter Date Calculator

Find the date of Easter in any year from 1583 to 4099, for Western and Orthodox churches, with Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Ascension, Pentecost, and the other moveable feasts.

Easter Date Calculator: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. Western churches compute it on the Gregorian calendar (the anonymous Gregorian algorithm); Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar's computus, and the result is converted to the Gregorian date. Both were checked against the python-dateutil library for every year from 1583 to 4099. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

How the date is set

The Council of Nicaea in 325 agreed that Easter should fall on a Sunday after the spring full moon. The rule now used takes 21 March as the equinox and a table of 19-year moon cycles, so the date can be computed years ahead without watching the sky.

For other faiths' festivals in the same year, see religious holiday dates; to count the days until Easter, use the countdown.

Holidays that move with Easter

In many countries Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, and Whit Monday are public holidays, and school holidays are often set around Easter, so they shift by up to five weeks from year to year. Lent begins 46 days before Easter, on Ash Wednesday, the day after Carnival ends.

Frequently asked questions

What is the earliest and latest date of Western Easter?

22 March and 25 April. The last 22 March Easter was in 1818 and the next is in 2285; the latest date, 25 April, comes next in 2038.

Why do Western and Orthodox Easter differ?

Orthodox churches still calculate with the Julian calendar, now 13 days behind, and its slightly different moon tables, so their Easter is most often one week later, sometimes four or five weeks later, and in some years on the same day, as in 2025 and 2028.

Is Easter tied to the real full moon?

Not exactly: both churches use tables of an ecclesiastical moon, which can differ by a day or two from the astronomical full moon.
