Dot Grid Paper: Print and Download PDF

Set dot spacing in millimetres or inches, dot diameter, colour and margins for a bullet journal or sketch page. Preview the result, print at actual size or download a PDF in your browser.

Dot Grid Paper: Print and Download PDF: Create a page of evenly spaced dots for journalling, lettering practice or sketch layouts. Set the distance between dot centres separately from the dot diameter: spacing controls the grid, while diameter controls how prominent each mark appears. Choose the sheet and margins to match the notebook or loose-leaf format you plan to use. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

A quiet dot grid for a journal, sketches or planning. The 5 mm preset starts ready to print.

Line colour sets the dot colour. Dot diameter controls its printed weight.

PDF uses standard fonts. Some scripts may need browser printing for correct lettering.

Counting rows and columns on a sheet

Let W and H be sheet width and height in millimetres, m the margin, d the dot diameter and s the spacing. Columns = floor((W − 2m − d)/s) + 1; rows = floor((H − 2m − d)/s) + 1. The diameter allowance keeps complete circles inside the margins. Dots are centred within the remaining area. For A4 at 210 × 297 mm, margins of 10 mm, spacing 5 mm and diameter 0.6 mm: columns = floor((210 − 20 − 0.6)/5) + 1 = 38; rows = floor((297 − 20 − 0.6)/5) + 1 = 56. The page therefore contains 38 × 56 = 2,128 dots. These settings reproduce the grid in the preview.

A guide for writing and drawing

A larger spacing leaves more room for handwriting; smaller spacing gives more guide points for compact diagrams. Dots do not define a drawing scale unless you assign one. You might choose one interval to represent one centimetre on a sketch, but label that choice on the drawing rather than assume a reader knows it.

ISO 216 (https://www.iso.org/standard/36631.html) defines the A-series paper framework. W3C SVG coordinates (https://www.w3.org/TR/SVG2/coords.html) describe physical lengths used in the artwork. Printer scaling and margins can still affect the final sheet, so check a sample before producing notebook inserts.

How to use it

  1. Choose the paper size, margins and centre-to-centre dot spacing.
  2. Set dot diameter and colour, or choose the 5 mm or compact preset.
  3. Check a measured print at 100% scale, then print or download the dot-grid PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 mm spacing the gap between the edges of dots?

It is the centre-to-centre distance. With dots 0.6 mm across, the clear horizontal gap is 5 − 0.6 = 4.4 mm. Changing diameter makes the marks heavier without changing the centre spacing.

What happens if I switch the spacing unit to inches?

The control converts the existing distance rather than keeping the same numerical value. Five millimetres is approximately 0.19685 inches. Dot diameter still uses millimetres, so its control remains independent of the spacing unit.

Why does the printed dot grid measure smaller than the setting?

A printer’s Fit to page option can scale the whole page. Choose actual size or 100% and match the paper size. Measure several intervals with a ruler: ten 5 mm intervals should span 50 mm from the first centre to the eleventh.
