CSV to TSV Converter

Convert comma-separated data to tab-separated, handling quoted fields correctly.

CSV to TSV Converter: TOEA reads the CSV with a quote-aware parser, so a comma inside a quoted field stays part of that field, then writes the rows back separated by tabs. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Where tab-separated is the default

Several tools expect tabs unless told otherwise. PostgreSQL's COPY in its text format and MySQL's LOAD DATA INFILE both split fields on tabs by default. On the command line, cut -f2 selects the second tab-separated column without any options, and awk -F'\t' and sort -t$'\t' work reliably because a TSV field never contains the separator. None of these understand CSV quoting, which is why converting first avoids broken columns.

One record per line

In the converted file every line is exactly one record, because line breaks inside cells were flattened. That makes line-based tools safe: wc -l counts records plus the header, head -n 101 gives the header and 100 rows, and split -l cuts a large file without breaking a record in half. In a CSV with multi-line addresses or comments, all three silently miscount. To go back to CSV for a spreadsheet or import form, use TSV to CSV.

How to use it

  1. Paste CSV or choose a file.
  2. Check the result.
  3. Copy or download the TSV.

Privacy & limitations

The text is converted in your browser and never uploaded, which matters when the file is a config or an export you would rather not hand to a stranger. Any tab or newline inside a cell is flattened to a space, because TSV has no way to quote them.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert to TSV at all?

Tabs rarely appear in data, so TSV avoids the quoting rules that make CSV awkward. Spreadsheets and many command-line tools prefer pasting it.

What happens to commas in my data?

They stay in the cell. That is the point of the conversion: once tabs are the separator, commas need no quoting.

What if a cell contains a tab?

It is replaced with a space. Leaving it would split the row, and TSV has no quoting mechanism to prevent that.

Does it handle quoted newlines?

Yes. A newline inside a quoted CSV field is read as part of the cell and flattened to a space in the output.
