CPM Calculator
Calculate advertising cost for every one thousand impressions.
CPM Calculator: Express advertising spend as a cost for each thousand recorded impressions. CPM puts different delivery volumes on the same scale, helping you compare the cost of showing adverts without treating impressions as clicks or unique people. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Cost per 1,000 impressions
$8.00
CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000- Spend and impressions cover the same campaign and reporting window.
- The result uses served impressions, regardless of viewability.
Formula and worked example
CPM = ad spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Ad spend | $2,000.00 |
| Impressions | 250,000 |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| Cost per 1,000 impressions | $8.00 |
Per mille: formula and example
CPM = advertising spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. With spend of 2,000 and 250,000 impressions, 2,000 ÷ 250,000 = 0.008 per impression; multiplying by 1,000 gives CPM of 8. The same delivery contains 250 groups of a thousand, so 2,000 ÷ 250 also gives 8.
IAB's glossary identifies cost per mille as cost per thousand served impressions (https://www.iab.org.nz/glossary). Impressions describe exposure opportunities rather than a guarantee that somebody read the advert or completed an action. The calculator cannot inspect ad delivery or audience attention.
Budget arithmetic and comparison
Rearranging the relationship gives estimated spend = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000. That is useful for a fixed-cost delivery scenario, but the widget here calculates CPM from spending and volume rather than accepting a quoted CPM as an input. It does not forecast auction prices or available inventory.
Use matching placements, dates and cost inclusions when comparing results. To obtain a combined CPM, divide combined spending by combined impressions and multiply by 1,000; averaging individual CPMs ignores different delivery volumes. A positive impression count is necessary. Zero spend can produce zero CPM, while zero delivery cannot supply a meaningful unit cost.

Frequently asked questions
What does the M in CPM mean?
It stands for mille, meaning thousand, rather than million or a distance in miles. Enter the full impression count, not the number of thousands: 250,000 impressions goes in as 250000. The formula supplies the factor of 1,000.
Can I use reach instead of impressions?
Reach counts distinct people or users; impressions count deliveries and can include repeated exposure to the same person. Enter impressions for CPM. Using reach would calculate a cost per thousand people reached, which answers a different question.
Does this calculate viewable CPM?
The tool performs no viewability filtering and assumes the entered count is the impression base you intend to use. For a viewable-only analysis, obtain a compatible viewable-impression count and spending total first, then label the result explicitly to distinguish it from served CPM.
