Cost per click
$2.00
CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks- Spend and clicks use the same campaign and reporting window.
- Platform fees should be included in spend if you want them reflected.
Formula and worked example
CPC = ad spend ÷ clicks
A worked example with sample values:
| Inputs | |
|---|---|
| Ad spend | $1,500.00 |
| Clicks | 750 |
| Results | |
|---|---|
| Cost per click | $2.00 |
Average click cost with real arithmetic
CPC = total advertising spend ÷ recorded clicks. Spending 1,500 for 750 clicks gives 1,500 ÷ 750 = 2 per click. The currency is whatever you used for spend. Doubling spend without changing clicks doubles CPC; doubling both inputs leaves this average unchanged.
IAB New Zealand defines CPC as average advertising cost for a click (https://www.iab.org.nz/glossary). This calculator uses the aggregate spend and clicks you supply, so it cannot distinguish individual click prices or identify which clicks later led to a sale.
Combining costs and following the funnel
To combine campaigns, add their spending and their clicks before dividing. Do not average their CPC figures unless they carry equal click counts. Keep media-only and fee-inclusive comparisons separate: adding management or platform fees to one campaign but excluding them from another changes the scope of the calculation.
A cheaper click does not establish that the campaign is more profitable. Compare the subsequent conversion counts, revenue and fulfilment costs if those outcomes matter to your decision. CPC describes what traffic cost; CTR describes clicks relative to impressions, and ROAS compares attributed revenue with advertising spend. None of those ratios alone measures every campaign expense.

Frequently asked questions
Is average CPC the same as my maximum bid?
No. This result is the spend divided by recorded clicks, calculated after or for a planned campaign. It does not set an auction bid, predict the price of the next click or show the most expensive click in the data.
Which clicks should I count when comparing campaigns?
Use the same click definition and reporting dates as the spend. A report of all interactions may include different events from a report of destination-link clicks. Mixing those counts can make the apparent cost lower without producing more comparable traffic.
What does zero clicks mean for CPC?
Spend divided by zero clicks is undefined, so a positive click count is required. Zero spend with recorded clicks returns zero cost per click. That arithmetic does not explain whether the clicks came from paid delivery, credits or a reporting adjustment.
