Complementary Color Generator

Generate the hue-opposite color on a deterministic HSL wheel.

Complementary Color Generator: TOEA applies this fixed formula: Complement hue = base hue + 180°. Color math runs locally in your browser. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Results are deterministic sRGB mathematical transformations; display appearance depends on your monitor and color profile.
  2. HEX input accepts #RGB or #RRGGBB notation. Values stay in your browser and are not uploaded.

Not the painter's color wheel

The opposite hue here comes from the screen's red–green–blue wheel, where red faces cyan, green faces magenta, and blue faces yellow. The wheel taught in art class, based on red, yellow, and blue paints, pairs red with green and blue with orange instead. So a blue such as #2563EB gets a warm amber partner here, close to but not the same as the orange a painter would pick. Grays, white, and black have no hue, so they come back unchanged.

Using a complementary pair

Two complements at full strength side by side appear to vibrate at their shared edge and tire the eye, especially as text on each other. Use one as the main color and the other as a small accent for a call to action, a highlight, or a chart line that must stand out. Lighten or darken one of them so the pair also differs in brightness, which keeps them distinct for color-blind readers and in grayscale.

How to use it

  1. Enter valid #RGB or #RRGGBB values and any requested percentage.
  2. Run the fixed browser-local color operation.
  3. Review the swatches and copy the result or palette values.

Privacy & limitations

Color values stay on this device. Contrast output is a mathematical checker, not a blanket WCAG compliance guarantee; context, font rendering, non-text contrast, and user interface states still need review.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Complementary Color work?

It uses Complement hue = base hue + 180°.

Which HEX formats are accepted?

Use three-digit #RGB or six-digit #RRGGBB sRGB notation. Alpha channels and named colors are not accepted.

Does the contrast result guarantee accessibility compliance?

No. It is a mathematical contrast checker for the reported colors and text thresholds, not a blanket compliance guarantee.
