Uppercase amount

壹仟贰佰叁拾肆元伍角陆分

Read aloud: 一千二百三十四点五六

Uppercase numerals cannot be changed by adding a stroke, so cheques, invoices, and contracts write amounts this way. 拾 is written even at the start (壹拾元), a run of zeros becomes one 零, and 整 follows 元 when there are no jiao or fen.

Worked examples

¥1,680.32 is 壹仟陆佰捌拾元叁角贰分; ¥105.00 is 壹佰零伍元整; ¥10,010 is 壹万零壹拾元整, with one 零 for the two missing places; and ¥0.50 is 伍角.

To put the amount on a bill, the invoice generator prints one; the VAT calculator works out the tax.

The capital numerals

零 壹 贰 叁 肆 伍 陆 柒 捌 玖 for 0 to 9, and 拾 佰 仟 万 亿 for ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand, and a hundred million. In Traditional characters 贰, 叁, 陆, 万, and 亿 are written 貳, 參, 陸, 萬, and 億.

How to use it

  1. Type the amount in yuan, with up to two decimal places; commas are fine.
  2. Choose Simplified or Traditional characters.
  3. Copy the uppercase amount.

Frequently asked questions

Why are capital numerals used for amounts?

一, 二, and 三 can be turned into larger numbers with a stroke or two, while 壹, 贰, and 叁 cannot, so banks require capitals on cheques and payment slips.

When is 整 added?

When the amount ends in whole yuan (伍佰元整) or, optionally, in whole jiao; never after 分.

Does it work for New Taiwan dollars?

Yes: choose Traditional characters. Taiwanese forms usually write 新臺幣 before the amount and 元整 after it.
