Arrange the characters in columns read from right to left, choose red lettering or white cut-outs, and adjust the shape, border, colour, rotation and worn-ink effect. Personal seals in Chinese art
Chinese seals have a history of more than two thousand years. Artists have used names, studio names and short phrases in their impressions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition explains their place alongside painting and calligraphy: https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2010/xie-zhiliu
Red and white impressions
In relief lettering, raised strokes take the ink and print red: zhuwen. Incised lettering leaves uninked white strokes against red: baiwen. The Metropolitan Museum explains these two ways of cutting an impression: https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2010/xie-zhiliu . The National Palace Museum's teaching programme also introduces zhuwen and baiwen: https://south.npm.gov.tw/ActivitiesDetailC006110.aspx?Cond=a0e39cdd-54ac-4802-a6a2-e551a62fb305

Frequently asked questions
Can I make an official or company seal?
No. Don't use this to imitate official, company or government seals. Official-seal wording triggers a warning and disables export. The tool is for personal names and artistic phrases, and has no official templates, emblems or registration-number fields.
Are these seal-script fonts?
No. The five choices are Ma Shan Zheng, Zhi Mang Xing, Liu Jian Mao Cao, Long Cang and Noto Serif SC: calligraphic or serif fonts supplied under the SIL Open Font License. Characters are stretched individually to fill their cells. A missing character stops export so you can choose another font.
How do the traditional layouts read?
Read each column from top to bottom, beginning at the right. A three-character name can place the surname alone on the right and the remaining two characters on the left, or use two characters on the right and one on the left. Four characters default to a two-by-two grid. The suffix counts towards the eight-character limit.
Why are white characters transparent?
White-letter seals leave the lettering uninked. The download uses transparent cut-outs so the paper or image underneath shows through. PNG exports are 1024 or 2048 pixels square; SVG keeps outlined lettering and procedural wear.
