CEFR Level Converter: Official English Test Alignments

Compare IELTS, current and legacy TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English Scale and Duolingo English Test scores through their organisations' own CEFR tables, with sources and dates.

CEFR Level Converter: Official English Test Alignments: Looks up each organisation's published CEFR alignment. It does not interpolate missing levels or predict a result on another exam. TOEFL legacy ranges follow ETS's current comparison table; Duolingo's combined A1–A2 band remains combined. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

TOEFL iBT changed on 21 January 2026. The 1–6 alignment applies to the overall score and each skill. Legacy ranges use ETS’s current 2026 comparison table, grouped by CEFR; an individual skill result does not establish an overall level.

IELTS does not report A1 or A2 ranges here. Its guide places 6.5 in B2 and 8 in C1, but identifies both as borderline. Cambridge ranges combine several qualifications; each exam reports a narrower range.

Duolingo’s 2026 guide reports A1–A2 together. The same combined range appears for either level; no separate A1 or A2 cut-off is published in this table.

IELTS

IELTS's guide maps B1 to 4–5, B2 to 5.5–6.5, C1 to 7–8 and C2 to 8.5–9. IELTS identifies 6.5 and 8 as borderline and does not supply A1/A2 ranges here. TOEFL iBT

ETS's scale introduced on 21 January 2026 uses half bands from 1 to 6. Its CEFR table applies to overall and all skill scores. Legacy 0–120 totals and 0–30 skills are grouped from ETS's currently published comparison bins, with no interpolation. Cambridge English Scale

Cambridge's results tables together report A1 at 100–119, A2 at 120–139, B1 at 140–159, B2 at 160–179, C1 at 180–199 and C2 at 200–230. Scores 80–99 have no A1–C2 label here. Accessed 2026-10-04: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/qualifications/results/

Duolingo English Test

DET Scoring Guide for Teachers 2026, section 2.4: A1–A2 at 10–55 (combined), B1 at 60–95, B2 at 100–125, C1 at 130–150 and C2 at 155–160. Scores use increments of 5. Accessed 2026-10-04: https://englishtest-static.duolingo.com/media/resources/DET_Scoring%20Guide%20for%20Teachers%20%282026%29.pdf

Frequently asked questions

Which TOEFL scale is supported?

The current band scale for overall or any skill, plus legacy total and individual reading, listening, speaking and writing scores. Labels distinguish them. The legacy alignment uses ETS's current comparison, not the older CEFR table.

Are the other test ranges equivalent scores?

They share a broad CEFR alignment. Concordances are approximate, individual results vary, and institutions set their own requirements. A skill score does not establish overall proficiency.

Why are some levels missing or combined?

IELTS does not report separate A1/A2 ranges in the cited table. Duolingo's cited guide combines A1–A2. No boundaries have been invented.

Does every Cambridge exam cover the whole scale?

No. The displayed ranges combine several qualifications; each exam reports results over a narrower range.
