Coverage and interpretation
SSA data limitations: https://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/limits.html . Fewer than five occurrences of a name in a sex/year are suppressed. Names are not merged by spelling or pronunciation. Similar-name suggestions use spelling, prefix and a simple sound key, rather than an origin or meaning database.
How to use it

- Compare the chart and peak or 2025 ranks; switch to per million listed births if useful.
- Choose the year view for top names and ten-year rank changes, or try a similar name.

Frequently asked questions
Does this cover births outside the US?
No. The source covers US births from Social Security card applications. Early years have less complete coverage.
Why is my name missing?
SSA does not list names with fewer than five births per sex in a year. Search also omits names with fewer than 1,000 total listed births across the period. Spelling variants are counted separately.
What does per million mean?
Births with that name divided by all listed births for that sex and year, multiplied by one million. The denominator includes the full source before the search cutoff, but omits rare names suppressed by SSA.
Can I share a comparison?
The names are stored in the address as ?names=Olivia,Emma after a search. The recipient can change the sex and chart scale.
