How YouTube reads the start time

Share and watch links take the start time in a t parameter: youtu.be/ID?t=90, or &t=90 added to a watch URL. YouTube also accepts forms such as t=1m30s; this tool writes plain seconds, the most widely understood form. Fractions of a second are dropped, so the link opens at the whole second at or just before the moment you entered. Embedded players ignore t. They use a start parameter in the embed URL, which the embed generator sets for you.

When you do not need a link

Inside YouTube itself, a timestamp typed as plain text, such as 4:05, in a comment or a description becomes a clickable jump to that point in the same video. Links are needed when pointing somewhere else: from a chat message, an article, show notes, or another video's description.

A youtu.be link carries only the video, not a playlist the viewer was watching it in. To send someone into a playlist at a given video and time, add &list= and the playlist ID to a watch URL by hand.

How to use it

  1. Paste the video URL.
  2. Enter a start time such as 1:30 or 90.
  3. Build and copy the timestamp link.

Privacy & limitations

The URL and timestamp stay in your browser. Creating the link does not load the video.
