How a description is laid out

YouTube allows up to 5,000 characters, but viewers see only the first few lines before the description is folded, and search results show a short snippet from the start. That is why well-run channels put the one line that matters first: what the video covers, or the main link. Chapters, credits, and link lists follow.

Timestamps in the description become chapters only when they follow YouTube's rules; paste an extracted description into the chapter checker to see whether a list works.

Reading someone else's description

Descriptions often hold what the video only mentions: sources, product links, music credits, and corrections the creator added after publishing. Affiliate links and sponsor codes are usually here too, so it is also where to look for how a video is funded.

Keep in mind that a description can be edited at any time, so the text you extract today may not match an earlier copy. For the hashtags in it, the hashtag extractor lists them on their own.

How to use it

  1. Paste a public video URL.
  2. Extract the description.
  3. Copy or download the available text.
