The Javanese calendar runs a five-day market week, the pasaran (Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, Kliwon), alongside the seven-day week, so each combination, a weton, returns every 35 days. Each day and pasaran has a number, the neptu, and their sum is used in traditional Javanese primbon for naming, weddings, and choosing dates. The calculation is anchored on 17 August 1945, Indonesia's independence day, a Jumat Legi.

The neptu values

Days: Minggu 5, Senin 4, Selasa 3, Rabu 7, Kamis 8, Jumat 6, Sabtu 9. Pasaran: Legi 5, Pahing 9, Pon 7, Wage 4, Kliwon 8.

Frequently asked questions

What is a weton used for?

In Javanese tradition it is the birth day by both weeks, used in primbon to describe character and to choose dates for weddings, moving house, and other events.

What does the combined neptu mean?

For a couple, the two neptu are added and interpreted with primbon tables, which differ between sources; this tool gives the numbers, not the interpretation.

Does the weton change at sunset?

In the traditional Javanese day, the new day begins at sunset, so someone born in the evening may count the next day's weton; this tool uses the calendar date.
