Encode values, not whole URLs

Characters such as ?, &, =, #, and / give a URL its structure, so a value that contains them must be encoded before it is placed in the URL. Encode each query value separately, then join them: ?q= followed by the encoded search text. Encoding a complete URL would also encode its :// and slashes and break it.

In JavaScript, encodeURIComponent is the function for values; encodeURI leaves structural characters alone and suits a whole URL that only has spaces or accents in it.

Spotting double encoding

%2520 in a URL means a space was encoded twice: once to %20, then its % to %25. It happens when an already-encoded value is encoded again, often by a framework that encodes for you. Decode once and look at what is left. To see every part of a URL separately, use the URL parser.

How to use it

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste a component value.
  3. Transform and copy the result.

Privacy & limitations

Nothing is sent over the network. This operates on a URL component, not an entire URL structure.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a space encoded as %20?

URI components use percent encoding; form encoding may use plus signs instead.

Can malformed escapes be decoded?

No. Invalid percent sequences are reported rather than guessed.
