Subtract Weeks from Date

Move a date backward by a whole number of seven-day weeks.

Subtract Weeks from Date: Work backwards from a deadline by a whole number of seven-day weeks. The earlier date keeps the deadline's weekday, making it useful for planning weekly preparation milestones. Month ends, year changes and leap days are crossed as ordinary calendar dates, while weekend and holiday closures are left for you to assess. ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Dates are calendar dates at UTC midnight; no local timezone or daylight-saving adjustment is applied.
  2. Results are planning utilities. Public holidays, locale-specific work rules, and company policies are not inferred.
  3. Weeks are exact seven-day calendar spans.

Look-back formula and New Year example

For reference date R and whole week count W, earlier date E = R − 7W calendar days. The product 7W is an exact day offset. It is unrelated to a numbered calendar week, so a year with an ISO week 53 does not alter how many dates are subtracted.

Enter R = 2025-01-08 and W = 3. The offset is 7 × 3 = 21 days. Going back seven days reaches 1 January, another seven reaches 25 December, and the final seven reaches 18 December. The result date is 2024-12-18 with 3 weeks subtracted. Both dates are Wednesdays.

Sharing a preparation milestone

Use the full returned date rather than a phrase such as three weeks before, which leaves the anchor implicit. ISO's format overview (https://www.iso.org/iso-8601-date-and-time-format.html) describes the unambiguous year-month-day order shown in the result.

A week subtraction is suitable for a checklist that repeats on the same weekday. A requirement stated in calendar months needs month subtraction instead, because a month contains more than four weeks in many cases. This page does not assign a meeting time or a time zone to the milestone. It also does not count the number of working shifts available before the deadline; those depend on the actual rota.

How to use it

  1. Select the deadline or other reference date.
  2. Enter a non-negative whole number of weeks to go back.
  3. Calculate the earlier milestone and check its suitability for your activity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the deadline counted as the first day when going back?

The deadline is the zero-offset anchor. A one-week subtraction moves seven full date steps backwards, so it reaches the previous occurrence of the same weekday.

Can this find a preparation date before New Year?

Yes. The subtraction carries through December into the preceding calendar year. You do not need to split the calculation at 1 January or reset the week count.

Why did the earlier milestone fall on a closed day?

The tool subtracts calendar weeks without testing office closures. It preserves the reference weekday even if that weekday is a weekend or a public holiday. Choose an appropriate workday separately when required.
