STL Viewer: Inspect STL and OBJ Meshes in Your Browser

Open an ASCII or binary STL or an OBJ mesh up to 200 MB, orbit and zoom the model, and inspect its bounding box, surface area and volume. Choose the file units and view a rough PLA mass estimate for the selected infill.

STL Viewer: Inspect STL and OBJ Meshes in Your Browser: STL triangles are read directly and OBJ polygons are triangulated as fans. The tool calculates bounds, sums triangle areas and uses signed tetrahedra for volume. It checks whether every edge is used twice and flags open or degenerate meshes. Raw WebGL draws a centred, shaded preview; statistics remain available without WebGL. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Mesh formats

Binary STL is recognised by its exact byte length and triangle count, even if its header starts with solid. OBJ vertex and face records support negative indices and slash-separated references. Polygon fans are most suitable for convex faces; material files and textures are not loaded.

Measurement limits

The model is fitted to the preview independently of the selected units. Changing units changes measurements rather than the original coordinates. A large mesh may take time and substantial memory to parse, analyse and draw.

How to use it

  1. Open an STL or OBJ file and choose its coordinate units.
  2. Drag to orbit, scroll or pinch to zoom, or reset the fitted view.
  3. Read the dimensions, area and volume, and adjust infill for a rough material estimate.

Privacy & limitations

The model is read and drawn in this browser. No mesh file is uploaded or saved by the tool.

Frequently asked questions

Which units does a mesh use?

The viewer treats coordinates as the file units you select: millimetres, centimetres or inches. Bounds and area are shown in millimetres and square millimetres; volume is shown in cubic centimetres.

Can I trust the volume for any mesh?

No. Open meshes, inconsistent face winding, intersecting surfaces and other defects can invalidate volume. The edge-count check is a warning heuristic, not a solid-model validator.

Is the PLA estimate a slicer result?

No. It assumes 1.24 g/cm³ and scales volume by the chosen infill. At 100% it is a rough upper bound for the model alone. Lower infill omits walls, and supports and waste are excluded.
