Social Media Character Counter

See at once how much room your post has left on X, Bluesky, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube, counted the way each platform counts, with the part that does not fit highlighted.

Social Media Character Counter: X is counted with twitter-text, the counting library X publishes: most Latin letters and punctuation count 1, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters and emoji count 2, and every link counts 23, however long. Other platforms are counted in characters as you see them, so an emoji built from several code points counts once. The limits shown are the standard ones and the date they were last checked is on the page. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

X counts most letters as 1 and Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters and emoji as 2, and every link as 23, using its own counting library. The other counts are of characters as you see them; a few platforms count some emoji as 2. Paid and business accounts can have higher limits.

Writing to fit

Most feeds show only the first line or two of a long caption before a more link, so the opening has to work on its own whatever the limit. Put the point first, and hashtags at the end where they do not crowd it.

Posting the same text everywhere means writing to the shortest limit, X's 280, or keeping a short version for X and Bluesky and a longer one for LinkedIn and Instagram. For a plain count of words and reading time, use the word counter.

Styled letters and links

Bold or script letters from the fancy text generator are separate Unicode characters, which X counts as 2 each and screen readers may read out oddly, so use them sparingly. Links count 23 on X whatever their length; to see how a link will look when shared, check it with the Open Graph checker.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your post, caption, or video title.
  2. Read the characters used and left for each platform.
  3. Pick a platform to highlight the part that runs over its limit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does X count my post as longer than it looks?

X gives Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters and emoji a weight of 2, so a post in Japanese holds about 140 characters, and every link counts as 23, the length of its t.co short link.

What are the limits?

X 280, Bluesky 300, Threads 500, LinkedIn posts 3,000, Instagram captions 2,200, TikTok captions 4,000, YouTube titles 100 and descriptions 5,000. Paid X subscribers can post longer, and Threads can attach longer text.

Do hashtags and mentions count?

Yes, every character of them counts toward the limit, including the # and @.

Why can't I use < or > on YouTube?

YouTube does not allow angle brackets in titles and descriptions; the page warns you if your text has them.
