What makes a good slug

Keep it short, lowercase, and readable: three to six words that say what the page is. Use hyphens rather than underscores, since search engines treat a hyphen as a space between words. Leave out dates and numbers that will go out of date, such as a year in an evergreen guide, and drop filler words where the slug still reads naturally.

Changing a slug later

Once a page is published, links and search results point to its slug, so changing it breaks them unless the old address redirects permanently (301) to the new one. After setting that up, confirm it with the redirect checker.

Slugs in non-Latin scripts work, but they are percent-encoded wherever the URL is copied as text, so they turn into long strings of % codes in plain-text messages and some analytics tools.

How to use it

  1. Enter a title.
  2. Review the live slug.
  3. Copy it into your URL or CMS.

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my input?

No. The work happens in your current browser tab.

Does it support Unicode?

Yes. Letters and numbers from non-Latin scripts are retained.

What happens to accents, ñ, and ampersands?

Accents are removed and ñ becomes n, so canción de año nuevo becomes cancion-de-ano-nuevo. An ampersand becomes the English word and, so write y or e yourself if the slug should read as Spanish. Any other run of spaces or punctuation becomes a single hyphen.
