Where Shopify already writes these tags
Most themes, including Dawn and the many themes built from it, already output the title, meta description, and Open Graph tags from layout/theme.liquid and a snippet such as meta-tags.liquid. Adding this snippet as well produces two titles and two descriptions. Comment out or remove the theme's own tags for the page types the snippet covers, then view the page source to confirm only one of each remains.
Titles and descriptions from the admin
Shopify's admin has a search engine listing section for each product, collection, and page, and Liquid exposes those values as page_title and page_description. The snippet reads those first, so a listing written by hand in the admin is what search engines see, and a listing left empty falls back to the item's own title and description. Changing a listing later then needs only an edit in the admin, not the theme. The admin's counters allow 70 characters of title and 320 of description, which is more than a results page shows, so write the listing with the pixel meters here.
A product description can be much longer than a snippet, and search engines simply truncate it. Check the output with the meta tag checker once it is live.
How to use it
- Choose Product, Collection, or Page, then enter the title, store name, description, and focus keyword.
- Review the page-specific URL preview, currency-aware product price, and pixel-width truncation meters.
- Save the reusable Liquid as a theme snippet and render it from layout/theme.liquid, or copy the separate static HTML output for testing.

Why measure titles in pixel width rather than character count?
Google truncates SERP titles based on container pixel width (~600px) rather than exact character count. Wide characters ('W', 'M') take up more space than narrow ones ('i', 'l').
Where do I paste the Liquid snippet?
Save it as a snippet such as snippets/toea-meta-tags.liquid, then render that snippet inside the <head> of layout/theme.liquid. It reads product, collection, page, shop, and currency objects at runtime, so preview values are not hard-coded. Replace overlapping theme metadata rather than adding a second title or description tag.
Can I paste the static HTML output into theme.liquid?
Use the static HTML panel for previews or a controlled test only. It contains the values entered in this tool; use the reusable Liquid output for a live theme so each page gets its own Shopify data.
