Spaces this does not touch

Ordinary spaces and tabs are collapsed and trimmed, but non-breaking spaces inside a line are left in place. They arrive with text copied from web pages, Word, and PDFs, look identical to normal spaces, and often explain why a cleaned line still has a wide gap or a search still fails. Zero-width characters are left alone too. The Unicode inspector shows exactly which characters a stubborn line contains.

Text where spacing matters

Tabs become single spaces and the indentation of every line is removed, which ruins code, YAML, and tab-separated data pasted from a spreadsheet, so use this on prose. Two spaces after a period become one, the usual modern convention. Blank lines are kept to at most one between blocks, unlike remove empty lines, which deletes them all and runs the paragraphs together.

How to use it

  1. Paste untidy text.
  2. Review the cleaned result.
  3. Copy or download it.

Privacy & limitations

Text never leaves the page. This is whitespace cleanup, not grammatical editing.
