What a decoded code can contain

A QR code holds plain text, and apps recognize a few conventions inside it. Besides web addresses, common ones are mailto: and tel: links, SMSTO: messages, contact cards that begin BEGIN:VCARD, and Wi-Fi details written as WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;;. The reader shows the raw text and offers to open only http and https links, so a Wi-Fi code photographed from a router or a printed card gives you the network name and password to copy by hand.

When a clear code still fails

Large photos are scaled down to at most 2400 pixels on the long side before decoding. If the code fills only a small corner of a big photo, its squares end up a few pixels wide and blur together. Crop the picture to the code with a little margin around it and try again; that usually works better than a sharper photo of the whole scene. Only one code is returned per image. When a picture holds several, such as a ticket and a flyer side by side, crop each one into its own file.

How to use it

  1. Choose a clear image containing a QR code.
  2. Let the browser scan it.
  3. Copy the decoded text or open an HTTP link.

Privacy & limitations
