Prorated Rent Calculator

Estimate rent due for a partial billing period.

Prorated Rent Calculator: Calculate rent for part of a billing period using a full-period amount and two day counts. You choose the period length and the occupied days, so the result follows that supplied denominator rather than automatically applying a calendar or lease convention. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. This is a simple planning estimate. Enter monetary values in one currency; no exchange-rate conversion is performed.
  2. Calculations run locally in your browser and do not account for jurisdiction-specific taxes, fees, benefits, or contract terms unless you enter them.

Formula and worked example

Prorated rent = monthly rent × occupied days ÷ days in billing period

A worked example with sample values:

Inputs
Full-period rent$1,800.00
Days in billing period30
Occupied days15
Results
Prorated rent$900.00
Daily rate$60.00

Full-period rent apportioned by days

Daily rate = full-period rent ÷ days in billing period. Prorated rent = full-period rent × occupied days ÷ period days. With rent of 1,800, a 30-day period and 15 occupied days, daily rate is 1,800 ÷ 30 = 60 and rent due is 1,800 × 15 ÷ 30 = 900.

This is proportional allocation using a unit rate, a relationship explained by OpenStax (https://openstax.org/books/prealgebra/pages/5-6-ratios-and-rate). Keep the unrounded daily rate when calculating the final amount; rounding it first can change the charge. The widget rounds displayed currency results after doing the calculation.

Calendar, fixed-month and annual bases

Under a calendar-day method, enter the actual 28, 29, 30 or 31 days in that month. For the same 1,800 and 15 days, a 31-day denominator gives approximately 870.97. A fixed 30-day denominator gives 900. The annual basis gives 1,800 × 12 × 15 ÷ 365 ≈ 887.67. These are comparisons of arithmetic conventions, not statements of a required rental charge.

The calculator defaults to 30 days but accepts another positive whole-period count. It does not choose the applicable lease method, add deposits or calculate other rental charges. An entire supplied period returns the full-period rent. Both day counts must be positive, so a zero-occupancy amount must be handled outside this widget.

How to use it

  1. Enter values using the units and assumptions shown beside each field.
  2. Calculate the fixed formula locally in your browser.
  3. Review the estimate and copy the result when useful.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool count move-in and move-out days from dates?

No. Enter occupied days as a whole number using the inclusion rule agreed for the billing period. There are no date fields, so the tool cannot decide whether an arrival or departure day is charged or detect the length of a particular calendar month.

Can I use a fixed 30-day month?

Yes, by entering 30 as the billing-period length and a compatible occupied-day count. Use that basis only when it matches the arrangement being calculated. The occupied days cannot exceed the denominator, so a full 31-day calendar month cannot be entered as 31 occupied days against 30 here.

Does it support the average month of 365 divided by 12?

Not as a fractional day input: period days must be whole numbers, and 365 ÷ 12 is about 30.4167. To reproduce that annual daily-rate method, enter twelve months' rent as Full-period rent and 365 as period days, then enter chargeable days. Rounding the average month to 30 or 31 changes the calculation.
