Mouse Polling Rate Test: Browser Hz Estimate

Move your mouse in circles to estimate its event rate. Compare current, average and maximum Hz and see the timing histogram, with browser limits explained.

Mouse Polling Rate Test: Browser Hz Estimate: Counts the mouse samples exposed by the browser, including grouped reports where available. Raw pointer updates are used when supported. One-second windows give current and maximum rates; average uses accepted movement time. Long pauses and very short timing outliers are excluded. It estimates browser event delivery, not the USB hardware's exact polling rate. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

0 delivered events; 0 samples after expanding coalesced events.

This is an estimate, not a hardware polling-rate measurement. Browsers can coalesce mouse reports or cap delivery at the browser/display rate. getCoalescedEvents() counts the reports inside each delivered event when available, without counting the parent twice. Chromium may support pointerrawupdate; iOS uses pointermove. Support is detected in this browser.

Current and maximum use one-second windows; average is weighted by accepted movement time. Pauses of 50 ms or more and intervals below one eighth of the typical interval are excluded. Equal timestamps cannot resolve separate reports. Keep moving continuously; no movement means no current estimate.

Pointer reports

W3C Pointer Events describes raw updates and coalesced samples. Expanding a coalesced list recovers samples the browser exposes, but cannot recover reports it discarded. Source: https://www.w3.org/TR/pointerevents3/#coalesced-events

Rate and filtering

Rate = accepted intervals × 1000 / accepted interval time in milliseconds. Intervals of 50 ms or more and intervals below one eighth of the median interval are excluded. These are analysis choices, not device specifications. Histogram bins count intervals in the latest window.

How to use it

  1. Start measuring, then move a mouse continuously in circles over the pad.
  2. Watch current, average and maximum window Hz and the interval histogram.
  3. Pause or reset, and compare with the mouse and display tests.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the estimate lower than my mouse setting?

The operating system and browser can group, limit or discard reports. Display cadence, power saving and timestamp rounding affect the estimate. A browser result does not verify the advertised hardware polling rate.

Are grouped reports counted twice?

No. Where the browser exposes grouped samples, those replace the parent event in the count. Equal timestamps cannot resolve separate reports.

Can I use an iPhone?

This test needs mouse movement. iOS does not provide raw pointer updates; it uses ordinary movement events. For fingers, use Touch Screen Test.
