Knitting Gauge Calculator
Calculate cast-on stitches, rows, finished width and a pattern-gauge conversion from your own measured swatch, with optional pattern repeats.
Knitting Gauge Calculator: Uses stitch and row density per centimetre, with 1 inch equal to 2.54 centimetres. Cast-on counts round to the nearest multiple of N plus E total edge stitches, with at least one repeat; ties round up. Pattern conversion preserves width, not shaping or row gauge. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

Your washed and dried swatch
10 cm and 4 in are separate gauge bases: 4 in is exactly 10.16 cm. Count inside the swatch, away from its edges.
Target dimensions
Cast-on counts use the nearest N × repeats + E, with at least one repeat. Ties round up. Rows round to the nearest whole row.
Convert a pattern stitch count
Unrounded: 100 stitches for the target width; 168 rows; 90.9091 stitches for the pattern conversion.
The rounded target cast-on gives a width of 50 cm.
This converts width only. Recheck shaping, row counts, fabric drape and pattern repeats before changing a garment pattern.

Frequently asked questions
Are 10 cm and 4 in interchangeable?
No. Four inches is 10.16 cm. Select the basis actually used for each swatch or pattern.
What does N plus E mean?
N is the number of stitches per repeat; E is the total edge stitches across both sides. The result is N times a whole number of repeats plus E.
Why does 100 become 91?
At 22 stitches per 10 cm, 100 stitches span about 45.45 cm. At 20 stitches per 10 cm that width requires about 90.91 stitches, rounded to 91 without repeat constraints.
