Throw history

Moon blocks are used in temple traditions to ask a question. One flat and one convex face is commonly read as assent; two flat faces as laughter or an unclear question; two convex faces as a negative response. Customs differ, and some people seek three consecutive Sheng jiao.

This is a simulation for curiosity or practice, not a substitute for the temple ritual. It makes no religious claims. Each block has an equal chance of either face, so Sheng jiao occurs about half the time and each other outcome about a quarter.

    Cultural context

Taiwan temple traditions use moon blocks to ask questions. Sheng jiao is commonly interpreted as assent, Xiao jiao as laughter or an unclear question, and Yin jiao as a negative response. Practices vary, and some worshippers seek three consecutive Sheng jiao. Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior religion portal (https://religion.moi.gov.tw/) provides cultural context for temple practices.

    Simulation probabilities

With two independent equally likely faces, the four combinations have equal probability. Two combinations produce Sheng jiao (50%); the other outcomes each have one combination (25%). The result is a browser simulation for practice, with no religious authority.
