Frequently asked questions

Does the chart play sounds?

It is a character keyboard. It provides symbols and descriptions but does not play recordings.

How do I add a diacritic?

Click after the sound you want to modify, then choose the combining mark. A dotted circle makes the mark visible on the button; it does not enter the transcription.

What do paired consonants and vowels mean?

A consonant pair puts the voiceless member first and voiced member second. At each vowel position, the unrounded vowel comes first and the rounded vowel second.

Why might symbols look different after copying?

The text uses Unicode characters. Other applications use their own fonts, so a font with IPA coverage gives the most consistent display.
