Inverting film negatives
Black-and-white negatives photographed on a light box or scanned become usable positives with a straight inversion. Color negatives do not: the film has an orange base, so an inverted scan comes out with a strong blue-cyan cast, and removing it takes per-channel level adjustments in a photo editor or dedicated scanning software. Photograph negatives with even backlight and fill the frame with the film to keep the result clean.
Inversion is not dark mode
Inverting turns every hue into its opposite: red becomes cyan, skin turns blue-green, and brand colors change completely. For a diagram or line art shown on a web page, CSS filter: invert(1) hue-rotate(180deg) darkens the background while turning hues roughly back to where they were. For a file that has to work on dark backgrounds, a separate dark version exported from the source artwork gives the cleanest result.
