GRE Calculator Online: Practise with the On-Screen Calculator Rules
A small practice calculator following ETS’s published arithmetic, display and memory rules, with its own button arrangement.
GRE Calculator Online: Practise with the On-Screen Calculator Rules: Use a small calculator to practise the computations described in ETS’s on-screen calculator guidelines. Its button arrangement is our own: the published text rules do not establish a layout to reproduce. Parentheses take precedence, then square roots, multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right. Entering 1 + 2 × 4 = gives 9. The square-root button acts immediately on the displayed number, so complete 21 × 21 + 54 × 54 with = before pressing √; the displayed hypotenuse is 57.939624. The question asks for the nearest 0.01, so enter 57.94 as the final answer. For speed conversion, 6 × 5280 ÷ 3600 = gives 8.8 feet per second; you can also finish the multiplication first to see 31,680. M+ stores the first displayed amount and adds each later amount; MR recalls the sum and MC clears it. The donation example stores 43×60, 21×80 and 16×100 to get 5860; divide by 80 for 73.25. Transfer Display fills the practice Numeric Entry box, which remains editable. Check the units, requested rounding and whether the answer must be a percentage before transferring. A result above 99,999,999, division by zero or a negative square root displays ERROR; C clears it. A positive result below 0.0000001 displays zero. There are no scientific functions or exponent keys. Estimate first and use the calculator only for tedious arithmetic, rather than letting decimal approximations replace mathematical reasoning. ETS calculator guidelines
ETS’s GRE Guidelines to Using the On-screen Calculator (https://www.ets.org/pdfs/gre/gre-calculator-guidelines.pdf) describes order of operations, memory, error limits and Transfer Display. Its worked examples supply the practice questions.
GRE test context
ETS’s Quantitative Reasoning overview (https://www.ets.org/gre/test-takers/general-test/prepare/content/quantitative-reasoning.html) describes the measure and question formats. Practise Numeric Entry by checking the form of the answer after transferring.
How to use it
- Enter numbers and operations with the keypad or keyboard.
- Use = before applying √ to a completed expression.
- Transfer Display copies the result into the practice Numeric Entry box.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use this page on the real GRE?
No. The real test supplies its own calculator. This page is a practice aid and cannot replace the test interface.

How are eight digits counted?
This practice calculator rounds to eight significant digits and keeps a leading zero outside that count. Thus 1÷3 displays 0.33333333. ETS’s hypotenuse example displays 57.939624, an eight-significant-digit value; the extracted guide’s repeating-decimal example says that the result is rounded but its digit image is missing. The leading-zero convention here is an explicit practice choice.
