Scope
A local construction check can catch many typing mistakes. A number that passes may still be unissued or unregistered for VAT.
Live check
To confirm that a business is registered for intra-EU trade, look the number up on the European Commission's VIES service.

Does a passing result prove that a business exists?
No. It checks format and check digits only. It does not query the VIES database, confirm registration or confirm that a business exists. Use the official VIES link in the workbench for a live check.
Can I omit the country prefix?
Yes. Select the country above the list. An explicit prefix on a line overrides that choice. Greece uses EL.
What does format only mean?
That number variant has no check digit to verify. Passing the format check is not a registration check.
