EAN-13 barcode

9780306406157

ISBN-10 weights its digits 10 down to 1 and must add up to a multiple of 11, with X standing for a check value of 10. ISBN-13 is the book's EAN-13 barcode number: 978 in front of the first nine digits of the ISBN-10, with a new check digit from alternate weights of 1 and 3. Books numbered from 2007 on may start with 979, which has no ISBN-10 form. The tool checks the arithmetic only; it does not look the book up.

The 2007 change

Since 1 January 2007 books carry 13-digit ISBNs, matching the EAN-13 product codes used by shops. Every older ISBN-10 converts by adding 978; the 979 prefix opened new number ranges, so those books never had an ISBN-10.

Hyphens

The hyphens split the ISBN into the prefix, the registration group (a language or country area), the publisher, and the title, and their positions vary; the tool ignores them. To cite a book, the citation generator formats the ISBN with the rest of the reference.

How to use it

  1. Paste an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13, with or without hyphens.
  2. Read whether the check digit is right.
  3. Copy the other form, or the barcode.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some ISBNs end in X?

The ISBN-10 check digit can be 10, written as the Roman numeral X, so that every check value fits in one character.

Is ISBN-13 the barcode number?

Yes: it is the EAN-13 number printed under a book's barcode, which the tool draws for you.

Can I get an ISBN here?

No: ISBNs are issued by your country's ISBN agency. This tool only converts and checks them.
