Conversion Rate Calculator

Calculate the share of visitors who completed a target action.

Conversion Rate Calculator: Calculate the percentage of an eligible audience that completed one defined action, such as a purchase or registration. Choose a visitor or session base that matches the conversion count to avoid measuring repeated actions as if they were separate people. Conversion rate

2.5%

Working formulaConversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors × 100
ASSUMPTIONS / READ BEFORE USING
  1. Conversions and visitors use the same audience and date range.
  2. Each conversion is treated as belonging to one eligible visitor.

Formula and worked example

Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors × 100

A worked example with sample values:

Inputs
Conversions250
Visitors10,000
Results
Conversion rate2.5%

A defined action and a worked percentage

Conversion rate (%) = conversions ÷ eligible visitors × 100. If 250 of 10,000 eligible visitors complete the chosen action, 250 ÷ 10,000 = 0.025, and 0.025 × 100 = 2.5%. This means 2.5 converting visitors per hundred in this example; it is not a suggested target or an industry average.

Keep the event definition stable: a completed checkout is different from starting a checkout, and a submitted registration is different from clicking its button. OpenStax's discussion of measurable objectives and reporting windows (https://openstax.org/books/principles-marketing/pages/2-4-marketing-plan-progress-using-metrics) provides background for choosing a consistent metric.

Which audience had the opportunity?

Exclude people who could not perform the action if your intended measure is the success rate among eligible visitors. Use compatible date ranges and decide how you treat conversions completed after the first visit. A reporting change can move the percentage even when the underlying customer behaviour is unchanged.

Click-through rate describes the earlier step from an impression to a click; conversion rate describes the later action relative to the audience you choose here. A click does not automatically become a visitor or a conversion. Zero conversions with a positive audience returns 0%, while an empty audience has no defined percentage.

How to use it

  1. Enter values that cover the same scope and reporting period.
  2. Choose a display currency when the calculation includes money.
  3. Calculate, then review the formula and assumptions beside the result.

Frequently asked questions

Should the denominator be visitors or sessions?

Either can describe a useful measure, but they answer different questions. A visitor rate counts eligible people; a session rate counts eligible visits. Count the numerator on that same basis, and label the result so a returning visitor does not silently change the meaning.

Why does the tool reject conversions above visitors?

This model treats conversions as a subset of the eligible audience, so its rate cannot exceed 100%. If one visitor makes several purchases, count converting visitors once for this measure. Orders per visitor is a different ratio and can exceed one.

How do I combine conversion rates from several campaigns?

Add the qualifying conversions and the eligible audience counts, then calculate from those totals, provided the groups do not overlap. A simple average of percentages gives a small campaign the same weight as a large one and can misrepresent the combined audience.
