Position details

Select a piece and click a square, or drag pieces from the tray or board. Castling uses KQkq; clear rights when the original king or rook is absent. Validation checks structural legality, not whether a position can be reached from a game.

Movement and legality

Moves and castling follow articles 3.1–3.10 of the FIDE Laws of Chess effective 1 January 2023. https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/e012023

Notation and diagrams

PGN moves use standard algebraic notation: piece letters, capture marks, destination squares and promotion pieces. Appendix C of the FIDE Laws explains this notation: https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/e012023 . A diagram records a position; it does not report repetition, time controls or a game result.

How to use it

  1. Select pieces and click squares, or drag pieces onto the board.
  2. Set the side to move, castling rights and en passant square, or import FEN.
  3. Load a PGN to step through legal moves, or download the position diagram.

Frequently asked questions

Are variations shown?

The viewer follows one PGN main line. Comments, numeric annotations and nested variations are ignored. A FEN tag can set the starting position. Illegal or ambiguous moves stop import.

Does FEN validation prove a position is reachable?

No. It checks structural consistency and king safety, not a complete proof that the position could arise in play.

Can I copy the pieces?

The diagrams use Unicode chess characters drawn by your device’s font. No third-party piece artwork is bundled.
