Zalgo Text Generator (Glitch Text) and Cleaner

Pile Unicode combining marks onto every letter for glitchy, creepy zalgo text, with the strength and direction you choose, or strip the marks from zalgo text to read it again.

Zalgo Text Generator (Glitch Text) and Cleaner: Unicode has more than a hundred combining marks, the characters that put accents on letters. Zalgo text attaches many at once to each letter, so they pile up over and under the line. The text is still the same letters underneath: cleaning removes every mark between U+0300 and U+036F and leaves the words. Runs 100% locally in your browser with zero server file uploads.

61 characters, of which 53 are added marks

Zalgo text stacks Unicode combining marks, the characters that normally put accents on letters, above, through, and below each letter. Many sites limit or strip them: usernames, search boxes, and some chat apps remove the marks or reject the text, and screen readers read them out as noise, so keep it out of anything people need to read.

Where the name comes from

Zalgo began in 2004 as a forum meme of edited comic strips, in which a creeping horror distorts the drawings and the words; the glitched letters became its signature look.

Cleaning pasted text

Combining marks are invisible on their own. If a name or comment breaks a layout, the invisible character detector shows every unusual character, and the cleaner here strips the marks.

How to use it

  1. Type the text.
  2. Set the intensity and choose marks above, through, or below the letters.
  3. Copy the result, or switch to cleaning zalgo text.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it look different on another device?

Each font and app draws stacked marks its own way, and some clip them to the line height.

Will it work everywhere?

No: many sites strip combining marks or limit how many a letter can have, and some reject the text altogether.

Is it accessible?

No: screen readers read out the marks or skip the word, so keep zalgo text to decoration, never to anything people need to read.
