Formatted Output
What pretty-printing changes
Formatting starts by removing comments and the whitespace between tags, then indents the result. Comments are therefore lost in both modes, so keep the original when they carry notes. Whitespace-only text between elements goes as well, even under xml:space="preserve"; for formats where it matters, such as mixed text in XHTML or Office XML, format a copy for reading and keep the original for use.
A quick check, not a full validation
The check confirms that every tag is closed in the right order. It does not check attribute quoting, entity references, or that the document has a single root, and it does not test the document against a DTD or XSD schema. For a strict check, xmllint --noout file.xml reports any well-formedness error, and xmllint --schema schema.xsd file.xml validates against a schema. To use the data in code, convert it with XML to JSON.
